Wood and Wire

After 45 years as a professional musician, 26 years of teaching, various shorter careers in carpentry and the culinary world, Phil and his wonderful wife Carol decided retirement would look good on them. Plans were made – see the world, travel the country in their camper and enjoy each other. Then things changed for everyone. We still got to enjoy each other but in the comfort of our home. We were grateful. We knew we were some of the lucky ones. We, like everyone else that could, hunkered down and found new ways to spend time. Carol got back into sewing and became the jigsaw puzzle master that she remains to this day. Phil had always liked to work with his hands and make things, set up a woodworking shop in their garage. While looking for a special gift to make Carol, he discovered wire trees (thank you YouTube). Creating these trees from pieces of wire soon became how Phil would spend most of his time – learning and developing new techniques through experimentation. Through this experimentation the idea was born to wed the trees to pieces of driftwood Phil & Carol had been collecting for years…..so the trees married the driftwood and they continue to grow and live happily ever after. Then came Phil’s desire to stay connected to music in some way as a maker. He made his first guitar stand out of a piece of mahogany that had been following him around for 35 years. So after family and friends telling him to get moving and sell these works of art, Phil is going for it. We had our first successful show on beautiful Islesboro, Maine at the end of July. In a few days our website Woodandwire.me will be born. It will show current inventory as well as information on commissioning pieces. We hope you enjoy the site.
